Attorney --> A person who receives a power of attorney from another; not necessarily a lawyer. This word in the UK has a different meaning from the same word used in the USA. The power of attorney gives the authority to the attorney to undertake certain tasks on behalf of the donor (the one who gives the power).
Attorney at Law --> lawyer, person admitted to practice law in his respective state
avvocato --> attorney, lawyer
Barrister --> A person who is a member of one of the four Inns of Court. A barrister has rights of audience in the High Court, which used to be exclusive but which more recently is shared with certain solicitors. A barrister may give specialised advice to solicitors in "Conference". A barrister is "called to the Bar" when admitted after qualifying.
Commissioner for Oaths --> An officer appointed by the Lord Chancellor to administer (i.e. to take) Oaths and Affirmations and Declarations to persons who com to them for this purpose. This office is now redundant since all practising solicitors can now do so without having to be commissioners. Older firms of solicitors may still designate themselves "Solicitors and Commissioners for Oaths"
Dipl. Steuerexperte --> Certified tax advisor
Dottore commercialista --> Graduate in economics with certified special competence in tax consultancy and professional accountancy
Fachanwalt für Arbeitsrecht --> lawyer with certified special
competence in labor law
Fachanwalt für Familienrecht --> lawyer with certified special knowledge in family law
Fachanwalt für Insolvenzrecht --> lawyer with certified special knowledge in insolvency law
Fachanwalt für Steuerrecht --> lawyer with certified special
competence in tax law
Fachanwalt für Verwaltungsrecht --> lawyer with certified special
competence in administrative law
Fürsprecher --> attorney, lawyer (Canton Berne only)
Lic. iur. --> Graduated from University (Faculty of Law) with Licentiate
Lic. oec. --> Graduated from University (Faculty of Economics) with Licentiate
Notary Public --> A person who is appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury to witness and validate the execution (signing) of legal documents such as deeds, affidavits, written documents, particularly where these are to be used outside the UK.
Queens Counsel (Q. C.) --> A Barrister who has applied for and been awarded the status as counsel to Her Majesty the Queen. A type of "senior" barrister who gives specialised advice to solicitors. He will "lead" a case before the court.
Rechtsanwalt --> attorney, lawyer
Solicitor --> A person who is qualified to give general legal advise and to conduct legal proceedings for a client and to represent the client in Court. A solicitor is an officer of the Supreme Court. He is enrolled on qualification and issued with a certificate annually entitling him to carry on business.
Steuerberater --> tax consultant, accountant
Treuhänder --> Fiduciary, Allrounder in Accountancy and Tax Consultancy
Unternehmensberater --> business consultant,
management consultant
Wirtschaftsprüfer --> auditor, chartered accountant
